Four weather warnings issued as heavy rain and wind set to batter coastal counties

The gardaí and local authorities have advised people to be extra vigilant, with some flooding expected.

MET ÉIREANN HAS issued four weather warnings for tonight and early tomorrow, with widespread rain and heavy winds on the way to Ireland.

A wind warning, a rainfall warning and a general weather advisory will all come into effect late tonight and last throughout the night into tomorrow afternoon, with coastal flooding a strong possibility.

A Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for tonight, with south to southwest winds expected to reach speeds of 60 to 65km/h, with gusts of 100 to 110km/h expected. Winds could reach higher speeds in exposed Atlantic coastal areas.

On top of this, a Status Yellow rain warning will also come into effect at midnight tonight for west Munster, Connacht and Donegal, with falls of 30 to 40mm expected.

A Status Orange marine warning is also in effect, with gale force winds developing overnight and early tomorrow on all coasts of Ireland and the Irish Sea.

Weather advisory warnings

The heavy rainfall and strong winds as well as high-tides have prompted Met Éireann to issue an advisory for the coastal counties of Wexford, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

From the website:

A combination of strong onshore winds, high tides and heavy rain brings the enhanced risk of coastal flooding overnight Monday and on Tuesday morning to exposed coastal areas.

Meanwhile, the gardaí and local councils have issued warnings, telling people to stay safe and exercise caution in the weather.

Clare County Council warned any owners of homes or businesses in “flood prone locations” to take extra care due to an increased risk of flooding.

Clare County Council is urging land, home and business owners in flood prone locations along the Clare coast to remain vigilant over the coming 24 hours due to a raised risk of tidal flooding.

Flooding

Spot flooding is expected in a number of areas overnight.

Tuesday morning will be wet and very windy, but the heavy rain will clear eastwards during the morning and early afternoon.

While brighter conditions will develop during the afternoon and early evening, heavy rain will develop again tomorrow night with strong winds.

Unsettled weather will continue until Friday.
